I was inspired by Fred Wilson’s use of positioning and how simple objects can be used to express different ideas. This piece was taken using my oldest childhood stuffed animal at the old grounds of Sanctuary Woods. Sanctuary Woods was a mental asylum that opened in 1880. The structure used 66 acres to “treat” mental health patients before it was completely torn down in 1994. The small remains of the structure symbolize a memorial for the patients who suffered there as well as for the unmarked graves that litter the location. The specific spot I took my picture was the Men’s Pavilion, it was built by patients for patients. Looking into the change that has happened over time both physically on my bear and on the asylum, as well as the change in mentality when working with mental health was an important goal of mine. My piece is both a statement on my own mental health journey from a young age, as well as a tribute to the patients who suffered to get us where mental health treatment is today.
